How to Pass A Sound Insulation Test...

We often get asked how to ensure a development passes a sound insulation test. The key is smart design, quality materials, and precise construction. Whether you’re working on a new build, conversion, or refurbishment, getting the acoustics right from the start is essential to meet building regulations and avoid costly remedial work.

Optimising Design for Sound Insulation

Effective soundproofing starts with high-mass materials like brick and concrete for walls, while floating and resilient floors help reduce impact noise. Lightweight materials are increasingly used, but their performance depends on proper layering—adding more doesn’t always provide a cost-effective return. To minimise sound transfer, avoid rigid connections, incorporate resilient layers, use mineral wool insulation with an air gap, and ensure thorough sealing at junctions.

Common Issues That Cause Test Failures

One of the most frequent causes of test failure is flanking transmission, where sound bypasses the main separating structure through floors, ceilings, or walls. Poor sealing, gaps in plasterboard, or unsealed service penetrations also weaken performance. Another overlooked issue is sediment buildup within partitions or on resilient bars, which reduces their effectiveness. Using incorrect screw lengths can also bridge partitions, creating unwanted sound paths.

Preparing for a Sound Insulation Test

Before testing, ensure all walls, floors, and ceilings are complete, insulation is properly installed, and gaps or service penetrations are fully sealed. Windows and doors should be fitted and closed, and floor coverings like carpets must be removed, as testing is carried out on bare floors.

Professional Acoustic Testing in London, Kent & the South East

At JG Acoustics, we provide expert sound insulation testing across London, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, and beyond. Our accredited acoustic testing services help developers, architects, and builders achieve Building Regulations Part E compliance, while our pre-test advice ensures projects meet the required standards before testing.

For larger projects, we can offer design appraisals before testing to help identify and resolve potential issues early.
